In any given second, there are about 2 million bits of information
available to be picked up through our senses. Our conscious
minds can process only about 7 bits of information per second.
So, what happens to all the rest of that information swirling
around us?
It
gets weeded out, or deleted from our consciousness, by the
subconscious mind—the
part of the mind functioning below the level of awareness. The subconscious
decides what to keep based on what we have told it in the
past is important to us. For
example, if someone once told us we had bad luck, and we believed it even a
little, the subconscious grabs that as important. It then
brings to our conscious awareness
the bits of information that show us we have back luck and filters out anything
that disagrees with that. This is the process that is functioning when 15 people
can witness the same traffic accident and give 15 completely different versions
of what happened – their subconscious minds all filtered the available
information differently, so they literally saw 15 different events.
The
subconscious mind contains much valuable, reliable information,
such as how to eat with
a fork, how to create a sentence and how to drive a car, all
of which
most people do without “thinking” about it. But most of us also
carry around information and beliefs buried deep in the subconscious that
are no longer
valid, but which are still used to filter our experiences.
In the last several
years, neuro-linguistic programming, or NLP, has come to be recognized
as one of the most effective ways to change that subconscious
filtering system. NLP uses techniques based on the way our brains learn
new
information
to assist us to discover and modify subconscious misinformation and outdated
decisions. These techniques utilize imagery from a state of meditation.
The meditative state allows easy access to subconscious information
and the subconscious
mind
learns fastest through images.
Effective
use of NLP techniques becomes something like ‘instant therapy,’ providing
the fastest, and nearly instant way for transforming subconscious misinformation
to beliefs that are true to ourselves and accurate for a life based on
choice rather than old, automatic reaction. The techniques
can be used for an amazing
array of benefits, such as: gaining self-confidence; learning a new skill;
functioning better within relationships; releasing old patterns
of behavior or addictions;
getting motivated; transcending traumas, hurts and fears; and even gaining
physical health.
The
subconscious mind and its database are the keys to “filtering in” and
creating a life as happy and fulfilling as each of us hopes to have.
NLP provides the tools for understanding the information
the subconscious holds and learning
to manage and consciously select that information. The result is that
you can change your life, by simply changing your mind.
