 A
forty-five minute commute, twice a day, from Garden Grove
to Irvine, used to be part of Christie
Walker Bos’s Monday
through Friday routine. But all that changed when she moved
to Big Bear Lake and began working out of her home back in
2001. Working as an editor/writer/photographer for a trade
publication based in New York City, Walker Bos’s work
schedule is based on New York time, ending her “official” working
day at 2 P.M. With zero commute, that leaves plenty of time
to do what she loves best, write romantic comedies.
“
I write for work about eyeglass lenses—not the most
interesting thing in the world. But my passion is writing
fiction, funny,
romantic fiction. If my books were movies—and I hope
someday they are—they would be movies like Sleepless
in Seattle, Must Love Dogs, No Reservations, Something’s
Gotta Give,” said Walker Bos.
Moving
to Big Bear and working out of the home gave her the time,
but where do the
stories themselves come from? Her
first novel, Magical Man List, now available as an E-Book
from Cerridwen
Press, was based on the true-life story of how Walker Bos
found her soul mate and husband, Robbie Bos. After creating
a wish
list for the perfect man, she planted the list in a “sacred” place
and waited for “prince charming” to show up.
The first guy to arrive on the scene was Robbie—not
at all what she had in mind. Yet within three months she
had checked
off 62 out of 65 items on her very own “Magical Man
List.”
“
The list doesn’t lie, so I married the guy, and have
lived happily ever after, ever since,” said Walker
Bos.
The
fictional version of the story is a fun, entertaining tale
of two girlfriends who make up Man Lists, plant
them and unexpectedly
find love. Magical Man List should be available in
print early 2009.
Her
second novel, The Write Man for Her, was also an E-Book for
10 months before becoming available
in print
in May
of 2008. Also a romantic comedy, The Write Man for
Her was inspired
by a local pilot who was a flight instructor at the
Big Bear Airport.
“
Ideas for stories are everywhere. I have notebooks filled
with book titles, plots, one-liners, rough outlines
for stories.
Sometimes I wake up at 2 A.M. with a fully formed
story. I’ll
get up and write it all down before going back
to sleep, otherwise it’s gone in the morning.
Having an idea has never been my problem. It’s
finding the time to turn it into a full-fledged novel.
Now that’s the trick,” sighed Walker Bos,
who is also very active in the community.
In
addition to writing, Walker Bos is the president of the local
Sierra Club group with over 180 members
in
Big Bear
Valley; a volunteer at the D.O.V.E.S
(Domestic Violence and Education Services) shelter in Big Bear,
and
a committee member of the Women of Wisdom. But
between volunteer work, “real” work,
and just trying to enjoy the beautiful mountain environment, Walker
Bos still finds time to write. Her third novel,
Getting Back to Delaney, will be coming
out in this winter first as an E-book and about 10 months later
in print. At her author’s Web site, found
at www.ChristieWalkerBos.com readers can read
excerpts
and reviews from all three novels and find out
more about the author.
Is
there a novel in the future with Big Bear as the setting?
As a matter
of fact there is.
After she completes book number four, which
she is
working on
now,
book number five will be set in the Big Bear Valley, a romantic
comedy of course.
