Welcome
to the first totally on-line issue
of Spring/Summer Big Bear Magazine.
Still amazing to me where we’ve come over the last couple
decades – from print to internet. Never did I think back
in 1995, when Big Bear Magazine began, our entire industry
would be so very different. Barbara

The
Chinese word for “crisis” is composed of two
characters. The first means “danger.” The second
means “opportunity.” Together, they signify “crisis.”
A culture is reflected in its language. This explains the different
perspective between Chinese and American culture with regard
to crisis. |

It
all started with the 1992 Landers/Big Bear earthquakes,
when lots of things Peggy and Jim Otterstrom owned got
broken. “We
didn’t like our ‘throw-away society’s’ consumptive
patterns, and even though we couldn’t change the world’s
path, we could change our own,” says Jim. |
|
Long

When
people talk about the beautiful views of the lake
available around the valley, Castle Rock nearly always
gets mentioned
somewhere in the conversation. Not so many seem to know
there is another trail with amazing views from the other
side of the lake—Cougar Crest trail. |

North
Shore Trading Company owners Jim and Janet Dooley are coordinating
the 2nd Annual Big Bear Paddlefest, to be held on the northern
shore of Big Bear Lake, July 11-12, 2009. The weekend event
is designed for those “serious paddle enthusiasts as
well as those new to the sports of canoeing and kayaking,” according
to Ms. Dooley. |

Social
channels on the Internet are becoming a useful part of Public
Relations, Customer Service, and Internet Marketing for businesses.
The Aberdeen Group of Boston says that even though ROI is
hard to measure, 68% of companies they interviewed (chosen
as “Best
in Class”) plan to increase their marketing budget
for social media. |
